AI Engineer (mid-level)

Melbourne-based engineer pairing with our senior on AI implementation work. Real client systems, real production code, real responsibility — without needing to lead the room yet.

About the role

This is the second engineering seat on RYB client work. You'll pair with the Senior AI Implementation Engineer and Tom on actual client engagements — building the integrations, agentic workflows, and data pipelines that turn the AI strategy into a working system.

You're not expected to lead the room with the client. You're expected to ship clean code, ask sharp questions, and be the person the senior engineer trusts to take a chunk of the work and run with it.

A typical week:

  • Pair-coding sessions with the senior on the trickier integration work
  • Independent work blocks delivering well-scoped pieces — a Lambda, a HubSpot workflow, a data pipeline
  • 1–2 days at a client site observing the people who'll use what you build
  • Code review + documentation — every system we build outlives us, so we write code other people can maintain
  • Internal R&D on the brain — RYB's own internal mission-control system that ships agents, integrations, and tooling

What we're looking for

  • 2–4 years building production software in TypeScript/Node, Python, or similar
  • AWS Developer Associate certification (or equivalent depth — we'll test for the depth, not just the badge)
  • Practical experience with Claude or OpenAI APIs — built at least one production system using LLMs, comfortable with prompt engineering, tool use, and basic agentic patterns
  • Ideally: AWS CDK, Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, API Gateway
  • Comfortable being directed by a senior engineer — confident enough to push back when you see a better path, humble enough to drop it when overruled
  • Melbourne-based with right to work in Australia
  • Bonus: experience with HubSpot, Monday.com, or similar mid-market SaaS APIs

How we work

  • Client-first — when there's client work happening, the client's calendar wins
  • Pair on hard things; ship solo on the rest
  • Markdown-first; Mermaid for diagrams
  • Honest assessments over polished pitches — read the forms paradox and shadow AI for the flavour
  • Code review is non-optional and not a status game

What we offer

  • Day rate at the upper end of the AU mid-level contractor band
  • Pairing with a senior engineer who actually teaches (not someone who just delegates the boring parts)
  • Real production responsibility — your code runs in client environments people actually use
  • Mix of clients across financial services, professional services, real estate, mid-market manufacturing
  • Pipeline currently supports 2–3 days/week ongoing

How to apply

Apply through this page. Tell us:

  1. The hardest production system you've worked on and what your specific contribution was
  2. One LLM-powered thing you've shipped (a prototype is fine; production is better)
  3. Your AWS cert + a link to one piece of work you're proud of (repo, write-up, demo)
  4. What you most want to learn from working with a more senior engineer

CV optional but appreciated.
