About the role
This is a client-side, Melbourne-based engineering role. You'll spend most of your time on the ground at our clients' offices in and around Melbourne — sitting next to the people whose work you're changing, not behind a Slack channel.
A typical week looks like:
- 2–3 days at a client site — pairing with their staff, sitting in workflow sessions, watching the work get done before changing it
- CRM + workflow integrations — typically HubSpot, Monday.com, Property Tree, plus AWS Lambda glue
- Agentic implementations — designing and shipping Claude-powered automations that land with the actual people using them
- Data plumbing — getting the data clean enough that the AI part has something to work with
- Discovery + scoping — sitting in client sessions, sketching diagrams on whiteboards, pressure-testing approaches in real time
This isn't a "go build whatever you want" role. Our clients have real operations that need to keep running. You'll write code that other people maintain after we leave — and you'll be the face of RYB in the rooms where decisions are made.
What we're looking for
- 5+ years building production software, ideally a mix of integration and full-stack
- AWS certification — Solutions Architect Associate or Professional, Developer Associate, or equivalent depth (we'll test for the depth, not just the badge)
- Anthropic certification — Anthropic AI Fluency, Claude Builder, or demonstrable equivalent. Comfortable with the Claude API, tool use, prompt caching, and agentic patterns
- Solid TypeScript/Node, ideally CDK
- Genuinely comfortable in front of a non-technical client — can explain a technical recommendation to a CFO without losing the room
- Melbourne-based with the right to work in Australia. Most days will be in client offices around the CBD and inner suburbs.
- Comfortable being the most-senior-engineer in the room and still asking the dumb questions
How we work
- Client-first; you'll structure most weeks around the client's calendar, not yours
- Markdown-first internally (we write everything down)
- Honest assessments over polished pitches — read the forms paradox and shadow AI for the flavour
- Clients are addressed by name and treated like adults; we don't anonymise them in internal work but we do anonymise them in public content (you're expected to respect that)
What we offer
- Day rate at the top of the AU contractor band
- A genuine seat at the client table — you set the technical direction, not a delivery manager three layers up
- Mix of clients across financial services, professional services, real estate, mid-market manufacturing
- Direct line to Tom — no account managers, no slide decks
- Pipeline currently means we can offer 2–4 days/week ongoing for the right person
How to apply
Apply through this page. Tell us:
- Which 2–3 things from the JD above you've done before
- One piece of work you're proud of (a repo, a write-up, a system you shipped)
- Your AWS + Anthropic certs (or what you've shipped that demonstrates the equivalent)
- A short note on a client interaction you handled well — a hard conversation, a course-correction, a moment you earned trust
CV is optional but appreciated.
